Szilvásvárad is a typical, beautiful Hungarian village, situated on the western side of the Bükk mountain range. This national park is about 345m high and offers many opportunities for hiking, running, cycling, mountain biking or riding the famous Lipizaner horses. Options for day trips include: walking to a cave above the Szalajka valley where prehistoric men used to live, or hiking through the forest to one of many designated picnic areas (many have a barbecue, but all are very nice in this area). The village is sparkling with life due to the many events which are organized throughout the year. In the village you will find many small shops as well as a supermarket. There is also a bank, a pharmacy and a local market with fruits and vegetables. The various restaurants in the village serve delicious local specialties. Many restaurants have menus printed in German, English or even Dutch. During the summer months there is a narrow-gauge train that will take you through the mountains to the Veil Falls (Fátyol-vízesés). On the way back you will pass the open air forest museum, a trout nursery and a deer meadow.
