Tradition is alive in the Aravis Mountains. The characteristic roofs, the so-called 'tavaillons' are an ingenious protection made of wood. Hiking in the mountains you will encounter chapels and flocks pasturing peacefully in the alpine meadows. The inhabitants of Entremont, La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand en St. Jean de Sixt continue to live the rural life, yet there's still a bustle throughout the year: a rhythm of life full of warmth and friendliness and the sounds of church-bells from valley to valley. Aravis is a gourmet region. It was here, in the 13th century, that the reblochon cheese was invented. The inhabitants of the alpine farms still make this creamy delicacy. Specialties of the region include cheese-potatoe pie, goat's cheese and sausages boiled in white wine. At half an hour's drive from Entremont lies Annecy on the north side of the lake with the same name. Town and lake are surrounded by snowy mountain tops which make it one of the most attractive towns in the Alps. Part of the town is medieval with canals, bridges full of flowers and covered streets. There are several places of interest: the impressive Palais de l'Isle, a 12th century prison in the middle of the Thion canal; the Château d'Annecy which, situated high above the town, offers a splendid view of the city and the crystal-clear lake. The best spot for aquatic sports is the east side of the Avenue d'Albigny at the Imperial Palace Hotel. Boat trips leave at the Quai Thion.
