The beautiful Dordogne region is known for its many castles and small villages. The small town of Fumel is 3 km away and Villeneuve sur Lot is only 25 km away. You can go on hikes in the woods, or, if you're looking for a little more excitement, you can go rafting down the river. The Le Lot River is just 3 km away. Here you can also swim or simply relax on the small beach. The Dordogne is also known for its cuisine and wines. Here you will find many vineyards in the vicinity and you can sample local dishes in the restaurants. Sarlat-la-Canéda is a nice place to visit as well. In the old medieval city there are several small streets and houses. The market- open every Saturday at Place du Marche-aux-Obies- offers many typical local products. The village of La Canéda was united with Sarlat on the 1st of March 1965. During the 13th and 14th centuries the city enjoyed a heyday as a trading center. Old Sarlat consists of two parts, separated by the Traverse or Rue de la République. The province of Lot is known for its caves. One of the most famous of these is the Cave of Pech Merle. In the 2-km-long cave you will find prehistoric rock drawings, which are the finest in France. It is also a very beautiful cave. In the cave you will see drawings of bison, horses, mammoths, cows, deer as well as abstract figures. In addition, these caves also contain unique hand prints (the hand was held against the rocks and colored powder was blown against it leaving a hand print on the wall), drawings of people and different footprints.
