Drenthe is one of the most beautiful provinces in the Netherlands. Here you will find extensive heath fields, where shepherds graze their flock, magnificent forests, quiet country roads which run along hedges and meadows, streams with clean water, and idyllic lakes. Between them, hidden in the surroundings, are picturesque little villages with typical Saxon farms as well as some larger cities. There are sufficient opportunities for hiking, cycling or excursions by car. Drenthe has a very comprehensive and extensive network of bicycle paths, even in the protected forest area, where cars are not allowed. Ideal for hiking or horseback riding. For those who want to know the history of the 'Olde' landscape, you can take a trip to the living heritage village of Orvelte or the open-air museum of Ellert en Brammert, both accessible from the park by bicycle. Also in the 'National Hunebed Informatiecentrum' Borger you can learn about the history of Drenthe. There are numerous attractions, activities and museums in the area, and owing to its central location, you are never more than 20-25 minutes away by car. There is the zoo of Emmen; the 'Boomkroonpad'; a toy museum and numerous smaller museums. Would you like to spoil yourself? Then Oosterhesseleen Baths offer you saunas, whirlpools, sun benches and Roman baths. For the children, the center of Drenthe offers numerous attractions such as Kabouterland, where creations by Rien Poortvliet come to life, and Speelstad Orange (Orange City game), a covered playground (dry in the rain and cool in warm weather). Just outside the province, but also easily accessible by car, are two large theme parks: Pony Park Slagharen and Avonturenpark Hellendoorn. The name Westerbork is always associated with Kamp Westerbork (camp Westerbork). In the forests of Hooghalen (north of Westerbork) you can visit a former concentration camp, with impressive monument and a memorial center with exhibits.
