Torrevieja (Valencian: Torre Vella, the old tower) is a seaside resort located on the Mediterranean about 40 km from Alicante. This area is known for its beautiful beaches and natural salt lakes- the largest in Europe. Other attractions in Torrevieja include the Church of the Immaculate Conception (Arciprestal Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción) and the historical casino. The church was built in neoclassic style, in the form of a Latin cross, with a bow vault and a simple portal with two bell towers. Inside there are statues of the Holy Maid, who is the patron saint of the city, and Christ. The casino, in the Cultural Community (Sociedad Cultural Casino), was built in 1882. The Moorish hall - the main salon - is strikingly beautiful and famous because of the works of major authors. From the terrace, which has been very beautifully incorporated into the front of the building, there is a beautiful view of the river port. In Alicante there are various castles, such as the Santa Barbara Castle (which sits high above the town), and the Castle of San Fernando (built to protect the city against the armies of Napoleon). Today (2003) the castle is used as a theme park.
