Property Description

The Old Winery is the most delightful property, highly recommended and enjoyed enormously by all of our clients who have spent holidays there over the years. It is located only about 2.5 km from the bustling main town of Fira, so all that this town has to offer with its nightlife, shops and restaurants is only a short drive away. However, Vourvoulos is a completely unspoilt hamlet where village life continues undisturbed by its noisier neighbour. This village is peaceful all year round. It is situated on the gentler side of the island, not overlooking the famous caldera, but to the hills and fields of the east with beautiful panoramic sea views. The property is 400 years old, and has always belonged to the current owner's family and this connection has been richly preserved. The owner's are delightful and extremely hospitable, upon arrival one is greeted with a warm welcome at reception and some local wine.

Local Information

There is a bus service to the beach and Oia and other parts of the island. A great advantage of this lovely property is that it is only about 1.5km or a 15 walk from the nearest beach, which is picturesque and has a very good fish taverna. There are many other beaches on the island to explore, mainly with the black volcanic sand. In the village there are tavernas providing good traditional food, grocery shops, an ice-cream shop and a bar. There is a cinema at Kamari which is 8km away. Other activities nearby include visiting the excavations at Akrotiri and horse-riding. Car hire is recommended and can be arranged with delivery of the car to Santorini Villas.

Leading from the gates of The Old Winery is a path alongside which are beautiful well tended flowerbeds which are illuminated after dark. There are several generous terraces on different levels, all of which have lovely views. The large oval swimming pool is situated on a lower level and is surrounded by terraces with sun loungers. There is also a large BBQ on this level with some round tables for al fresco dining. Sometimes the owners arrange BBQs for guests. The pool opens late May and closes at the end of September every year. There is a large wide terrace on the upper level with a shaded awning and tables and directors chairs offering panoramic views to the sea and the perfect spot to enjoy a peaceful drink and to read a book. The Old Winery is set high up on the hill at the top of the village, a good vantage point and offering much privacy and peace from the bustle of the village down below.

Directions

There are direct charter flights flying from the UK to Santorini. Alternatively one can fly to Athens and then take an internal flight to Santorini which is a journey of only about 40 minutes. Another route is to fly to Athens and then to go to the port of Rafina. From here there is a high speed hydrofoil to Santorini which takes about 4 hours. Timetables need to be checked as times of ferry departures vary from season to season, and a useful web site for this information is www.gtpnet.gr The owners of Santorini Villas will arrange for a taxi to collect clients from either the airport of the ferry port. We do recommend car hire for this property and this is something that the owners can arrange for you and they will have the vehicle delivered to their property.
