Local Information
The sleepy coastal village of Punta Banco and the famous surfers beach of Pavones have a number of small bars and restaurants serving simple but good food. Fresh fish can be bought from the fishermen at Pavones. There is a grocery store at Pavones that sells just about everything needed for cooking meals and a small handicraft shop. In the village nearest to the house are two very small stores for necessities and in this area meat and other foodstuffs can be ordered from the little local markets. There are many activities available such as hiking through the tropical rainforest and fruit orchards, swimming in the warm Pacific ocean, body surfing, and surfing at world famous Pavones beach where there are lessons and equipment available, snorkeling and exploring marine life or soaking in the Tide pools, walking along miles of unspoiled beach, exploring streams and waterfalls, watching monkeys playing in the trees, watching turtles nesting in season, surf fishing and riding horses along the deserted beaches. A paradise for bird watchers, there are parrots, parakeets, a wide variety of hummingbirds, toucans, wrens, hawks, owls, woodpeckers, trogons, vultures, pelicans, swallows and many, many others. The abundant wildlife includes ocelots, manatees, sloths, deer, otter, squirrels, coati mundi (raccoons), opossum, anteaters, armadillos, wild boar, lizards, colourful and poisonous frogs, toads, iguanas and many more. This area is wonderful for anyone who likes living close to nature, who wants to experience living on the edge of both a tropical rainforest and the magnificent Pacific ocean and can therefore enjoy everything these spectacular environments offer.
During the rainy season, the mornings and early afternoons are typically sunny and it can rain late afternoon or at night. The rainy season can start in April or May with Sept - Nov being the months that get the most rain. People that live in Punta Banco prefer the rainy season. It is cooler (still tropical) but just more comfortable. The waterfalls are full, the flowers beautiful and the fauna is green and lush.
